An essay written by Douglas Hyde just before the turn of the century described ‘a blackness on the sun of Ireland’ – a dark cloud, like a great crow choking and smothering the people of Ireland, breathing poison from its beak, sucking away the courage of the people and putting fog and cold into their hearts. This crow was the English mind and ‘the Englishing of Ireland’. It was to be slain by a bow whose arrow was the Irish language, its archer the Gaelic League. The Irish people would then ‘stand without chains on body or mind, free in the presence of God…’.1

In the essay, Hyde translated some Irish verse which expressed an ancient tradition constant in Irish folk legend through centuries of sorrow and misfortune :
